Women and the Blue Economy Baseline

In partnership with Malaika Foundation, we are currently conducting the Women and Blue Economy Baseline Project Survey. The scope of this research project revolves around understanding the dynamics of the blue economy and its impact on the productivity of the female population. Specifically, our focus is on conducting a thorough examination of the socioeconomic aspects of Masese Beach in Jinja, Uganda, and Dunga Beach in Kisumu City, Kenya, both located on Lake Victoria.

The primary objective guiding this study is to answer the central question: "Who has ownership of the lake: Women or Men?" To address this query, the baseline survey encompasses the following key aspects:
  • Identifying dominant socioeconomic activities in these areas, assessing their diversity, and measuring productivity levels.
  • Examining the technologies utilized in local production.
  • Evaluating the extent to which products from these activities reach local or export markets
  • Investigating the overall well-being of the community, with a specific focus on women.
  • Scrutinizing the historical socioeconomic activities influencing the beaches and the livelihoods of women in these regions.
  • GIS Mapping and final reporting.

The baseline survey employs both quantitative and qualitative methods, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups, to gather comprehensive data. It particularly focuses on women engaged in blue economy activities to capture diverse perspectives. Findings will fuel a comparative analysis, unveiling unique socioeconomic and cultural intricacies at each beach. This sets the groundwork for advancing women's productivity and promoting gender equality in blue economy resource management.
